Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible for the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
You are generally eligible for the CDCP if you do not have access to private dental insurance, your adjusted family net income is under $90,000 CAD, and you meet the age-based rollout criteria. The plan has been rolling out in phases by age group, starting with seniors 87 and older in late 2023, then expanding to younger groups over time.
What are the CDCP co-pay brackets?
The CDCP uses three co-pay brackets based on adjusted family net income:
- 0% co-pay for incomes under $70,000
- 40% co-pay for incomes between $70,000 and $79,999
- 60% co-pay for incomes between $80,000 and $89,999
- Not eligible for incomes of $90,000 or more
Does having private dental insurance affect CDCP eligibility?
Yes. If you have access to private dental insurance or coverage through an employer, union, or other benefits plan, you are not eligible for the CDCP — regardless of your income or age. "Access" means coverage is available to you, even if you have not enrolled.
What is "adjusted family net income" for CDCP purposes?
Adjusted family net income (AFNI) is the combined net income of you and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable), with certain CRA adjustments. It is based on your most recent tax return. The CDCP uses AFNI to determine your co-pay bracket. If you are unsure of your AFNI, check line 23600 of your Notice of Assessment, then add your spouse/partner's amount.
When will the CDCP be available to adults under 65?
The CDCP has been rolling out in phases. Adults aged 55–64 and 18–54 are part of later rollout phases. This estimator reflects publicly available rollout schedule information, but exact dates may change. Always check Health Canada's official website at canada.ca/dental for the most current rollout information.
